CSA - PVT E. J. Sutherland, Age 23, joined CSA in Lowndesville, SC, mustered at Camp Butler, Sept 10, 1861 Company I, "McCalla Rifles Unit", Infantry, 14th Reg't, SC Vol, Capt. H. H. Harper, Commander. Elisha J. "Elijah" Sutherland signed for the duration of the War. Elijah died from pneumonia on Dec 24, 1862 at Camp Gregg and reported by Capt. Harper. One record shows that he served time in Company D, Infantry, 14th Reg't. SC Volunteers Captain H. H. Harper, Commander. "McCalla" Rifle Unit so named for Mr. McCalla, merchant of Lowndesville, who furnished uniforms for the troop.
