General Notes (Husband)
CSA -Pvt. William .A. Sutherland, age 19, enlisted in Company "I", 14th Reg SC Volunteers in Lowndesville, SC, under Capt H.H. Harper, Commander. They mustered at Camp Butler on Sept 10, 1861. Gus was wounded at Malvern Hill, Richmond, VA., on June 27, 1862. He lost the end of his pointer finger on his left hand. and Furloughed (CSA Record) by Oct 1, 1862. Gus attended the reunion of his old comrades of Company "I" on Sept 2, 1896 in Lowndesville, SC. Company "I", 14th Infantry Regiment was organized August 22, 1861 at Lowndesville, SC by Captain Henry H. Harper, Commander. George R. McCalla, an outstanding citizen and farmer in the fork donated the uniforms. There were eighty men in the beginning and others joined later. Captain Harper was promoted in 1863 to the staff, with the rank of Major. Lt. William R. White was then promoted to Captain and Commander. Co "I" fought at Gaines Mill, Frazier's Farm, Second Manassas, Ox Hill, Harpers Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Siege of Petersburg and other battles. The company surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA with seven men able for duty. The company had four Negro cooks who were free men of color. They were Alex Stratton, John McCoppin, Sidney Glynn and Sam Tucker.
Wlliam Augustus was age 8 in 1850 census Savannah River Area. After the war, Gus moved his family to a farm southeast of Iva, SC on the Anderson and Abbeville County line, where he became well known. He was listed 1860 Lowndesville District, Abbeville County, SC. age 19, with his parents. He and Martha were there and census reflects (a) Martha, about age one month.??
General Notes (Wife)
While Gus was away in the war, Martha Anne suffered great privation. She and two sons (John Andrew and William) survived by the grocer's gift of a bone which Martha Anne boiled and scraped to give nourishment. Then she made soup to help keep them alive.
Death Notes for Child: John Andrew SUTHERLAND
John Andrew died of a "Stroke" and buried beside his wife, and in the plot of his parents.
General Notes for Child John Andrew SUTHERLAND
John and Sara lived on the Sutherland farm near Lowndesville, SC and later moved into Iva, Anderson Co, SC. John was involved in various enterprises and owned the first automobile in Iva. He operated a taxi service for the area and also owned a cotton gin.
John listed 1920 census as age 58 (Nov 1861)

Death Notes for Child: Margaret Alice SUTHERLAND
Margaret and her unborn child were victims in a tragic fire, where she was severly burned on her abdomen. They died from the burn. The child's body was buried in the casket with the mother.
General Notes for Child Henry Franklin SUTHERLAND
Henry and Jo had twelve children- four died in childhood. They made their home in Iva. South Carolina deaths has obit in Anderson Daily News page 13, Jun 10, 1932.
Henry was listed 1910 census, Corner Town (Iva), age 37 (born Dec 1872). Josephine was 2 years older than Henry. They had 8 children, and 6 living.
