General Notes (Husband)

CSA - Pvt Thomas D. Sutherland, Abbeville, Reserve Unit, 14th Reg. SC Volunteers, joined in Lowndesville, SC. The Reg mustered Sept. 10, 1861 at Camp Butler, Capt H.H. Harper, Commander.
(The duty of a Reserve is to replace men on Leave, killed, or hospitalized. This duty is for 90 day intervals or less, if they get permanent replacement)
The Records, except one, for Thomas were lost or misplaced. It is customary for a soldier, changing stations, to carry a copy of his record.

The Official Record -- Pvt Thomas D. Sutherland: reported to Lt. James M White, Company G, 5th S.C. Reserve at Summerville, SC on Nov 10, 1862, for duty, until Feb 15, 1863. He was given a Medical Discharge on Nov 24, 1862. (Note--Lt James M. White was promoted to Captain and made Commander, to replace Capt. H. H. Harper, who had been assigned to Staff and promoted to Major)
Sworn Affidavits by Martha Sutherland (wife), J. B. Moseley (Co i, 14th Reg't SC Vol), and H. T. Cunningham (Co and Reg't unreadable), state that Thomas Sutherland was in Co. I, 14th Reg't from Sept 1, 1861 until his death in June 1864.
[Record of Civil War soldiers listed Thomas D. Sutherland as also being assigned to the
8th South Carolina Infantry and 5th South Carolina Reserves]
Thomas could have gone home with the 'Medical diacharge' but instead, he reported back to his Unit, Co I, (Mccalla Rifle Unit) 14th Reg't SC Vol., without mention of the Discharge. He fought beside his brothers for another year before dying.
Within the past couple years we have found where Thomas is buried and efforts are being made to put up a 'Headstone' and try to get him the credit he deserves.

The McCalla Rifle Unit was so named after the merchant, Mr. McCalla of Lowndesville, who furnished uniforms for Captain H. H. Harper's men.
David Ernest Tillman, (cousin), member of "Sons of Confederate Veterans" is offering his services in locating the graves of these brothers.
