Clara Capps Babb. 92, of Hendersonville, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in Pardee Hospital following a period of declining health.
She was born Sept. 9, 1906, in Henderson County and was the sixth of 10 Children born to the late Abraham "Doc" Capps and Paulene Sentell Capps. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Swan Burnette Babb Sr., who died in 1989.
She graduated in 1923 from the Fruitland Institute. She attended UNC-Chapel Hill and completed her master's degree in education at Western Carolina University in 1952. She was employed by the Henderson county School System for 47 years, the last 27 years as principal of Valley Hill Elementary School.
She was selected as N.C. Teacher of the Year in 1959. She retired for education in 1972 and started an antique business, which she operated until 1985. She was a quilter, having displayed and marketed her quilts at the Blue Ridge Community College Walking Fair for many years.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Upper French Broad Defense Association adn Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a longtime member of the Falley Hill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for more than 30 years.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Swan B. Babb Jr. and Suzette D. Babb, both of Hendersonville; a granddaughter and her husband, Cherissa B. Wilkins and David Wilkins; two great grandchildren, Landon adn Savannah Wilkins; a sister, Martha Capps Davis.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Shepherd's Street Chapel with the Rev. H. Alexander Viola officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors. Memorial contributions may be made to Henderson County Public Library, 301 N. Washington St., Hendersonville, N.C. 28739.
