Elmer W. Holtzclaw
Elmer Walter Holtzclaw, 78, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in the Mission St. Joseph's Hospital After A short illness.
He was born in Henderson County and lived most of his life in Transylvania County. He was a son of the late Walter P. and Pearl Ledbetter Holtzclaw. He served six years in the Army, having spent 2 1/2 years in the South Pacific theater where he received several medals. He was a brick mason and retired from DuPont in 1984. He was a devoted husband and father, spending his time seeing that his family was well cared for. He was a member and deacon of Little River Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 54 1/2 years, Alma Hamilton Holtzclaw; a daughter and son-in-law, Donys-Kaye and Raymond Merrill; a son and daughter-in-law, Darius-Wan and Krista Holtzclaw; four grandchildren, Marisa and Joffrey Merrill and Crystal and Whitney Holtzclaw; two sisters, Clara Reid of Lexington, S.C., and Helen Orr of Columbus.
A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Little River Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff Maynard will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Littler River Baptist Church building fund.
