Ulysses and Emily Ballard spent the majority of their married years as caretakers at Connemara in Flat Rock, now known as the Carl Sandburg Estate. While living at Connermara, the Ballards had five children. They grew up at the Connermara and attended Flat Rock School. Mr. Ballard was caretaker at Connermara for forty years, then at the King home across the road from Kenmure.
After Ulysses's death Emily went to live with her daughter, Lillian Moorehead, in Gadsden, Alabama, until her death.
