General:
John & Mary 1880 census, Crab Creek, Henderson Co, NC.Marriage Notes (Mary E. McCALL)
John and Mary settled in a valley between Pinnacle Mountain and Chestnut Ridge. Forty acres were obtained from his father, Alexander McCall. This was called the Ann Hamilton tract and joined the Forman Speculation Company property.
During the Civil War, the Confederate Army sent out details to bring in conscripts or kill them. John Jasper did not agree with the Confederate cause. He and his brother Champion, along with some friends hid out in a cave about three miles from his home. Some of his neighbors made their way to Union lines and joined the Union forces. A few of the mountain men fought in both armies.
