Notes
Birth Notes:
Edna Earle Patterson was named for the female character in book, "St. Elmo" written by
Augusta J. Evans.(Edna Earle was a girl, age 12, that witnessed a duel between Clinton and Mr. Dent. Mr. Dent was killed and Edna thought it was murder, and wanted Clinton punished. She later fell in love with him" - Harold Pepper, bro-in-law, stated he was going to call her "Bill" and Bill was what she was called. At least by family. St. Elmo was Mom's favorite book, she had the feeling it would be a "Classic" and so it was. "Bill" would have
been loved by everyone, regardless of the name.
General:
The name Edna Earle came from a book "St Elmo" written by Augusta J. Evans about 1866. Today, St Elmo is a Classic and not for sale, nor signed out at the library. It'a about a 12 year old girl, Edna Earle, that witnessed a duel (by mistake) and could not understand why Clinton was not punished for murder. Annie Sutherland Patterson loved to read and this was her favorite. When Harold Pepper, brother-in-law, heard the name, he stated that he would always call her "Bill" - so the name stuck. Augusta J. Evans is known for his novels--Annie just loved by everyone, especially children --Edna married Jewell Saxon and they retired from 'Harris textile mill' in Greenwood, SC
Edna had two bad falls -- Fell off front steps 2002 and injured her hip, fell in 2003
and injured her "back", but, she seems to be doing ok, for her age, since then.
