Rev. "H W" (Hampton William) Patterson was born June 18, 1806 in North Carolina. He lived in Rutherford Co., a section that was surveyed into McDowell Co, formed 1842.Marriage Notes (Elizabeth MOORE)
He was appointed Superintendent of Public Schools in 1841.
Hampton was ordained to ministry by Mountain Creek Baptist Church June 21, 1834.
Baptist Ministers serving for Green River Association 1844 included Rev. H W Patterson at New Bethany, McDowell Co., and Montford's Cove, Bill's Creek, and Round Hill, Rutherford County.
Refuge Baptist Church (branch of Ebenezer Baptist) was organized July 13, 1847 in Henderson County, constituted by Rev. H W Patterson, James Blythe, and Noah Parr Corn. Liberty Baptist (also branch of Ebenezer), in Edneyville, Henderson Co. was
Constituted at the home of Rev. HW Patterson, in March 1848.
He was active in the Salem United Baptist Association, serving as moderator in 1853, and 1854. In earlier years, he had been a messenger to the Salem Association from the Catawba River Association and from the Broad River Association, preached and served on committees. Churches he served in the Salem Association included Laurel Springs in McDowell County, Foreman's Friendship (Tyron, NC) and Stone Mountain. In 1849, he was a messenger to the Western North Carolina Baptist Convention. The composite roll of ministers who served in the Western NC Baptist Association (1858-1897) listed H.W. Patterson at Davidson River (1858-1878), and at Pigeon River (1874-1892). (Need to confirm dates, as Hampton died in 1880).
Hampton served at Little River Baptist Church, Henderson County, in 1848 and 1849, and again in 1859, having been at Crab Creek Baptist in 1858. His G-son, Rev. Sherman Patterson (known for his work with the Salvation Army) also served at Little River about one hundred years later.
The Patterson and Hamilton family had their first reunion in 1920. They included the Osteen and Pickelsimer families (because of many marriages) in the 1921 August Reunion. A "Historical Outline of Patterson, Hamilton, Osteen, and Pickelsimer Families", printed August 1922, is in Henderson County library.
Hampton Patterson was a staunch Unionist during the Civil War.
Known in many records as "H. W. Patterson"
Baptist Association possessed an annotate letter that stated
"Hampton Patterson was excommunicated from a church in
Habersham Co, Georgia. (a) John and Joseph Patterson got excommunicated because of absentee, about 1825 but no Hampton.
The church also made a rule not to except anymore transit families.
Hampton was married in Rutherford Co, listed there in 1840 "Hamp"
Patterson, listed Hampton W. Patterson 1850 census McDowell Co,
formed about 1848.

Then Elizabeth listed Crab Creek 1880c.and Indiana 1900c.
John Patterson was present at the wedding of Hampton and Elizabeth,
but no confirmation he was the father.
