J.S. Patterson was born in Tennessee, November 1, 1867. Died at his home in East Flat Rock, February 11, 1928, being 60 years three months and 10 days of age. Was buried in Mud Creek cemetery February 12, 1928. In September, 1889, he was married to Florence Barron. To them were born five children: U.G. Patterson, Mrs. O.L. Norman, M.J. Patterson and Mrs. D.P. Dunnahoo of East Flat Rock; Mrs. P. L. Garmon of Matthews, NC. On July 7, 1902, he was married to Dovie Floyd (his first wife having died September 6, 1901). To this union were born 13 children, 11 of whom are living, they being, Doris, Mrs. Geter Maxwell, Craig, Hamilton, T. C., Bertha, Gertrude, Willis, L.C. and J.S. Jr, all of East Flat Rock.
Surviving him besides his widow and children are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Patterson of Hendersonville, R.F.D. No. 3; three brothers, R.M. Patterson of Asheville, Ernest Patterson of Hendersonville, Sherman Patterson of Atlanta. Two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Guice of Hendersonville and Mrs. T. C. Williams of East Flat Rock.
At the age of 17 the deceased joined the Holly Springs Christian Adventist church and was a life long member. He will be remembered as one of Henderson county's pioneer and foremost real estate dealers. Was much beloved by all who knew him; which was expressed by the host of friends, approximately 1000, who attended his last rites; also by the many and beautiful floral offerings.
The formal services were appropriately conducted by Rev. J. W. Groce of East Flat Rock, and Rev. Carl Blythe of Etowah. Pallbarers being E. D. Roper, J.F. goodman, Otis McCall, JH. H. Glover, F.P. Jones and Z. V. Kilpatrick.---contributed
Real Estate; Farming; Moonshine
He was a real estate investor; the family remembers that he donated the property for East Flat Rock School with the provision that it would always be used for education. Now the land has been sold by the county and the school is no longer in use.
He had a big farm between Hendersonville & Asheville in the area of Guertin. He often had
big parties on his farm; bandleader Jan Garber played at at least one party there as remembered by Bertie. At times by Pauline Norman came to cook for his parties, where many politicians gathered. She took Ruth and Noel with her and they played in the kitchen.![]()
