About six months after their marriage, Rita and Odd moved in with her parents, Caroline and Fate Osteen, in the spring of 1924. Caroline had begun to have problems with her heart and Rita wanted to be near her mother and keep house for her.
All four of Rita's children were born while she and Ollie were living with Rita's parents. Rita and her family lived with her parents until Caroline died on May 10, 1935. After Caroline's death, Fate's mother, Naomi Harkins moved in with Rita and her family. Rita took care of Naomi until she passed away on 16 March, 1944. After Fate's mother died, Fate went to live with his daughter Ida Bell Blake. He lived about 9 years and died on July 18, 1953.
Odd worked at the local prison camp as a guard for many years. He also worked at the Olin Plant (now Ecusta) as a security guard until he retired. Odd's favorite things were hard work and pitching horseshoes.
Rita was born and grew up in the Catheys Creek Community near Brevard. She attended the Catheys Creek Subscription School as a child, and attended the Brevard Institute (now Brevard College) for two years as a young lady.
She married Odd when she was 23 years old and spent the next twenty years raising her children and caring for her parents and grandmother Naomi. Any spare time that Rita had, was spent gardening, crocheting, or knitting.
Rita and Odd were loving caring parents who brought their children up to believe in God and respect their country. They were members of the Catheys Creek Baptist Church near Brevard.
