Notes
General:
Annie Belle Sutherland was very close to family ties. She became a big sister to her brother Walter when his twin "Willie" died in 1903. Walter's death seemed to be the worse period in her life. It took her ages to get over the initial shock and she never once believed he committed suicide. Being the "Big Sister" and second mother to Walter, at age 4, gave her an "insight" with children. Every child was special and she treated them with love and understanding. They fell in love with her. Some of them still came to her for advice, after they were married with kids. Jay Hugh Patterson and Luke Smith
treated her like a second mother. Her love for children made such an impression on her daughter, Barbara, that she made her goal in life, to entertain, love and help all children, especially the sick and under-privileged. As a young girl, Annie gathered money to help have the Confederate Statue erected in Abbeville. She had lost her g-father and most of his brothers in the Civil War. This statue was ruined by vandals in late 1900's. Until 1930, when the family moved to Greenville, she was constantly being sought out for advice on personal, family and trivial matters. Maybe also because of her cooking. Annie operated a boarding house in early 1900's and people came for years, afterwards, to eat.her cooking. Her daughter, Alice, could have made as much money baking cakes as she did at music. Annie was admired by many people, young and old.
Her 'Motto' was, if you can't speak well of anyone, don't speak.
Annie Belle Sutherland assisted in getting a statue (Confederate Soldier) erected in Abbeville, SC. Before age 5, she became a companion & second mother to Walter (brother), who lost a twin at age two, giving her an" in-sight" with children. Her love and understanding made her a friend "Miss Annie" to many children. Due to this,Barbara became a clown, making her goal "to CARE for children". Annie and Dan made many friends when they kept "boarders" during their early marriage. The home became a place to gather on Sunday, for family, friends, and business until we moved in 1930.
Annie was very close to her family members. Before she moved from Iva, SC to Greenville, many of them came to her for advice on many problems. She was a friendly, easy going, lovable and very caring person with everyone she met, especially children or those in need. She was one proud woman, during WW II, with the "Five Stars" in the window. Barbara was in training to make it six stars. Annie was "BOSS" at her home and Dan made sure of it.
