Janet Kay Butler was born in Rutherford County, NC, but due to the employment of her dad, they moved often and she attended 16 schools before graduating.from T.C. Robinson High School in Skyland, NC. in 1964.
She became pregnant that year by Paul Haynes and went to the Florence Critton Home for unwed mothers to have the child, which was a son. It was adopted through the Children's Home Society in June 1964. the adoption closed and she has never had contact with the child which would now be age 40.
Janet married Dannie F. Arnold, August 15, 1966. Dannie was in US Marines and spent 13 months tour of combat duty in Vietnam. She worked as a 'Hairdresser', 'assistant in dental office, and then went to work with an apartment community. She was leasing agent, site manager and marketing director for South Carolina, traveling throughout the state.
After divorcing Dannie, she met Robert T. Stephens, whom she married after dating two years.
In 1995, Janet began taking one class at Meredith College. It began an odyssey for which
she had no idea how it would effect her. It took until 1999 to get a degree in Art History.
She and Bob traveled to Greece, Turkey and Isreal with Meredith. This was a trip of a
lifetime. During the education process she learned to question and research for answers if she was not satisfied with the information given to her. she was involved in the 23+ program of W I N G S. For several years she was head of the refreshment committee
and always participated in the yearly celebration of "Corn Huskin" at Meredith each fall. Janet went to Europe in 1998 with the Meredith A Broad program. She got 10 credit hours and spent 10 weeks in Europe. She stayed in Italy, Prague, Switzerland and England. Bob joined her in England and after the Meredith group left Janet and Bob
joined her in England and after the Meredith group left Janet and Bob went to Ireland for an additional week.
Retirement has allowed us to discover and work on some of the things we did not have time to do while working and going to school. We have joined Duke Institute in Learning Retirement. Bob is playing the bassoom and I am singing in the choral group.
